Acupuncture Session

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a safe and effective evidenced-based practice that stimulates the body’s natural healing process, used to treat a variety of conditions.

Acupuncture treatment involves very fine needles gently inserted into specific points on the body, the physical stimulation of needle insertion at these sites may affect pain processing in the central nervous system and muscles and increase blood flow to certain parts of the body.

A course of acupuncture is usually recommended because it can take a few sessions for you to see improvements.

what to expect

During the session, you'll usually be asked to sit or lie down. You may also be asked to remove some clothes so the practitioner can access certain parts of your body.

Several points may be used during a typical session, depending on the number of symptoms you have.

The needles may be inserted just under the skin, or deeper so they reach muscle. Once the needles are in place, they may be left in position for a length of time lasting from a few minutes up to around 30 minutes.

You may feel a tingling or a dull ache when the needles are inserted but you should not experience any significant pain. If you do, let your practitioner know straight away.

The needles used are single-use and pre-sterilised, they are very fine and usually a few centimetres long.

Some people experience mild, short-term side effects such as: pain where the needles puncture the skin,

bleeding or bruising where the needles puncture the skin, drowsiness, feeling sick, dizzy or faint

Acupuncture

electro-acupuncture

Electro-acupuncture is a modern variation of acupuncture. It uses electricity to enhance the benefits of this traditional therapeutic treatment. Like traditional acupuncture, electro-acupuncture uses needles placed in the same sites, with the addition of a small electrode attached to the needles.

A small amount of electricity runs through the electrode and gives a slight vibration or soft hum during treatment. This ensures you get the right amount of stimulation during your whole treatment.

The treatments are also shorter because the electrodes can activate your acupuncture points more quickly. ‌

A benefit of using electroacupuncture is that it can cover larger areas of your body than traditional acupuncture. This ability makes this type of acupuncture more accurate than others.
